WBB | Laurentian Ends Weekend With Heartbreaking OT Loss

The Laurentian Voyageurs women's basketball team ended their weekend road trip on Saturday as they looked to snap their 3 game losing streak facing the Ottawa GeeGees.
The GeeGees came into the game as the 4th ranked team in Canada according to U SPORTS while the Voyageurs have struggled since coming back from the Christmas break winning just one of their first five games of 2025 putting the GeeGees as heavy favourites going into this matchup.
The previous night Laurentian had trouble in the turnover department and the start of the game on Saturday was more of the same story. A total of 10 turnovers were committed by the Voyageurs leading to multiple points off turnovers for the GeeGees as they would lead 20-15 going into the second.
From there though Laurentian was able to fight back. They managed to do a great job in the second quarter getting to the free throw line as the team as a whole would go 9-10 from the line in the second. Emilie Lafond would lead the way going 5-6 from the charity stripe and putting up nine of her game high 29 points in the second. In the end, the game would go into halftime with Ottawa in front at 34-28.
The third quarter was played extremely evenly with neither side pulling away from each other and the teams both scoring 15 points a piece keeping it at a six point game going into the fourth and keeping Laurentian in a great position going into the final ten minutes.
The fourth quarter saw Laurentian battle fighting all throughout the fourth to pull off an unlikely upset against one of the country's best teams. At the 3 minute mark Molly Adams made a shot to put Laurentian up 59-58 giving them their first lead since the start of the game. Both teams exchanged baskets before Ottawa would tie the game at 64-64 with three seconds left forcing the game to overtime.
Unfortunately for the Voyageurs it was not to be as the GeeGees would outscore Laurentian 9-6 in the extra frame giving Ottawa the 73-70 win.
The Voyageurs top performers on the day were Emilie Lafond who as mentioned before put up a game high 29 points along with 8 rebounds while Molly Adams came up with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Laurentian's next match will be on Friday when they travel to Sault Ste. Marie facing off against the Algoma Thunderbirds.
