RECAP: Gee-Gees and Gaels honour Francis Perron, Queen’s wins in Kingston
In a pre-game ceremony, the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Queen's Gaels football teams honoured fallen Gee-Gees player Francis Perron at Richardson Stadium in Kingston on Saturday.
Following a moment of silence, Perron's jersey in a frame was brought to centre field, the Gee-Gees and Gaels captains had commemorative stickers featuring Perron's number 99 placed on their helmets.
As play was whistled in, the Gee-Gees sent 11 players out, bringing Perron's jersey out as the 12th player and took a ceremonial delay of game penalty prior to actually kicking the game off.
Once the game was underway, the teams felt each other out for the majority of the first quarter. Late in the frame, the Gaels pushed the Gee-Gees deep into their own end and capitalized on for their first score early in the second quarter.
In all, throughout the middle-stages of the game, Queen's posted five unanswered scores to build a stable 30-0 that held until late in the fourth quarter.
On the final drive of the game, quarterback Ben Maracle evaded a sack and found receiver Nathan Walker for a 32-yard gain. Taking a hard hit on a roughing the passer call, Maracle was replaced by Matt Mahler, who entered the game and capped off the scoring drive finding Walker for a five-yard touchdown.
"It was emotional," said Gee-Gees head coach Marcel Bellefeuille. "It was nostalgic, it was a mixed bag of feelings. Being on the field again, since last weekend, just being a part of a football game again, it was really different."
"It was important to play the full 60 minutes, not only for [Perron], but for our team."
The Gee-Gees will return to Ottawa to prepare for the Panda Game against Carleton next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at TD Place.
