X-Women top Tigers 99-45
Kaitlyn Ferrier had a team-high 12 poitns in the loss Friday.
The Dalhousie Tigers fell to the STFX X-Women with a final score of 99-45 on Friday at the Saputo Centre.
The first quarter saw Dalhousie start with a brief lead at 3-2 after a three-pointer by Kaitlyn Ferrier. Mercy Olugu contributed significantly with a jumper and free throws, keeping Dalhousie competitive. Despite these efforts, the X-Women capitalized on turnovers and went on a scoring run late in the quarter, building an 11-point lead by 1:33, before Dalhousie narrowed the gap, ending the quarter 21-16 in favor of the X-Women.
At the start of the second quarter, Melina Collins hit a three-pointer at 9:46, assisted by Madelyn White, to bring the score to 19-21. Despite a series of missed shots, Eva Widmeyer and Sydney Guker-Wickie managed to add to the scoreboard with a jumper and a three-pointer, respectively, keeping the team competitive. Mercy Olugu contributed a jump shot at 2:15, but the quarter concluded with the X-Women extending their lead, ending with a 27-10 run in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Dalhousie scored 11 points, highlighted by Sydney Guker-Wickie's five-point contribution, including a three-pointer with an assist from Karina Sarai. Kaitlyn Ferrier added to the tally with a jumper assisted by Mercy Olugu, contributing to a total of five baskets made by the team. Despite their efforts, the X-Women extended their lead to 34 points by the end of the quarter, with a strong performance that included 23 points and capitalized on turnovers.
The fourth quarter saw the X-Women extend their lead with a strong offensive performance, scoring 28 points, including multiple three-pointers, and maintaining a solid defensive presence with only three personal fouls. Dalhousie's effort included notable contributions from Mercy Olugu, who scored a free throw, and Kaitlyn Ferrier, who added a jumper and a free throw to the tally. Despite Dalhousie's defensive efforts, including steals by Eva Widmeyer and Karina Sarai, the X-Women's scoring streaks, particularly with Mali Straker's three-pointers, kept them ahead as they concluded the quarter with a 99-45 victory.
Dalhousie's basketball team showcased noteworthy performances from several key players. Kaitlyn Ferrier stood out with 12 points, making 5 of 12 field goals, including one three-pointer. She was integral in leading the team's scoring efforts. Sydney Guker-Wickie contributed significantly with 8 points, hitting two three-pointers and adding three rebounds. Mercy Olugu was also a strong presence, scoring 9 points and securing four rebounds, while adding an assist. Karina Sarai led the team in rebounds with seven, consisting of four offensive and three defensive, alongside two assists, proving her value on both ends of the court. These players were pivotal in the team's overall performance.
The Tigers return to the court on January 18 when they head to UPEI.
