SMU sweeps UdeM 3-0
(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The Saint Mary's Huskies swept the visiting Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-17) on Friday evening in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.
Saint Mary's jumped out to early leads in the first set. The Huskies led 5-1 before a two-point Moncton rally trimmed SMU's lead to 5-3. SMU used a 4-0 run and led 9-3 and doubled-up UdeM 16-8 halfway thru the set. The Huskies closed out the set on a 9-6 run, winning the first set 25-14.
The Aigles Bleues took early leads of 3-1, 6-4 and 8-6 in the second set. SMU used a two-point run to tie up the set 8-8 and a SMU hitting error gave UdeM a 9-8 lead. Moncton extended their lead to 14-13 before a SMU kill evened up the set 14-14. Both teams battled each other tough towards the end of the set tied and were tied 23-23. Moncton took a one-point lead at 24-23, when SMU called a time out. Saint Mary's used a 3-0 run to win the set 26-24.
SMU led 9-4 after the first technical time out and 15-11 halfway thru the third set. SMU called a time-out as Moncton pulled within two points at 16-14. Moncton used a time-out when Saint Mary's took a 21-16 lead. SMU closed the third set out on a 4-1 run, 25-17.
UdeM drops to 3-12 on the year and SMU improves to 6-8 in conference play.
Moncton hosts Dalhousie January 27 at 2 p.m. while SMU travels to Memorial University February 1-3.
