Mounties fall to Axewomen in season finale
(SACKVILLE, NB) In what was the final regular season game for both teams, Acadia came out victorious 2-0 against Mount Allison at Alumni Field.
Throughout the first twenty minutes it was Acadia who held the majority of the possession and found themselves with two well positioned freekicks that they could not capitalize on.
The game's first good chance came in the 36th minute as a dangerous Axewomen cross found a foot in tight but the effort went over the bar.
Acadia pressed hard just before the half as Grace Longley (Bedford, NS) sent a cross in that Mounties keeper Sophie Austin (Kanata, ON) managed to get her fingertips on to thwart a great chance. The Axewomen would follow that up with a header that sailed just high and the game remained scoreless.
The start of the second half saw the aforementioned Longley take a wonderful touch to go around the last Mounties defender and make no mistake to put her team up 1-0. She would go on to be named the Subway Player of the Game with a brilliant all-around performance.
Acadia's second goal would come courtesy of an Alli Kelly (Halifax, NS) screamer from 30 yards out that stood no chance to be saved.
The Mounties (2-8-2) end their 2022 season with ten points, good for eighth in the standings as of today. This young team will look to build on the positives from this year heading into the 2023 season.
Acadia (9-2-1) currently sit in second place and will wait to see the outcome of the Dalhousie vs. UPEI game on October 29 and hope to get a first-round bye headed into the AUS Championships.
