Tigers fall to Capers 70-62
Sydney Guker-Wickie led the Tigers with 18 points and 6 rebounds.
The Cape Breton CAPERS defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 70-62 in AUS Women's Basketball action at the Sullivan Fieldhouse on Friday, February 14.
The first quarter saw the CAPERS and the TIGERS neck and neck with DAL maintaining a small lead for most of the period. CBU rallied for points near the end to finish the quarter at 15 points apiece.
The second quarter saw similar action with the Tigers pulling ahead by as many as 9 points with 5 minutes left to go. The CAPERS rallied again and managed to pull ahead by 1 at the end of the half with a score of 36-35.
CBU came out strong at the start of the third pulling ahead by 5. The Tigers fought back with a strong offence pulling ahead by 10 with 1:37 left to go in the quarter. The CAPERS closed the gap slightly, ending the quarter down by 7, with a score of 51-44 in favour of DAL.
In the final stanza, the CAPERS slowly crept up on the Tigers and were able to pull ahead with 4 minutes remaining in the game. The two teams battled but a key steal by Hailey MacLeod followed by 2 free throws in the game changed the game in the CAPERS favour. In the final 7 seconds of the game, Amanda Cruikshank went to the line twice and made all 4 shots to seal the deal. The CAPERS walked away with a 70-62 win over the Tigers.
Sydney Guker-Wickie led the Tigers with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Melina Collins added 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists and Madelyn White scored 13 points and added 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
Kiyara Letlow, the Subway player of the game, had a double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Amanda Cruickshank added 11 points and 7 rebounds while Chermensa Van la Parra and Hanna Smith both chipped in with 10 points each.
The CAPERS held fundraisers throughout the evening in support of "Shoot for the Cure", with 100% of funds collected from the fundraisers and the gate going to the Cape Breton Hospital Foundation.
The CAPERS and the Tigers will face off again at the Sullivan Fieldhouse tomorrow, February 15. Tip-off is at 6pm.
