RECAP: Gee-Gees take season opener versus Sherbrooke
The Gee-Gees women's rugby team scored early and often, as they defeated the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 70-0 Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out Matt Anthony Field crowd.
Madison Grant and Alexandra Ondo each scored three tries, as the Gee-Gees got their season off on the right foot. In total, eight different Gee-Gees found the end zone.
"Considering we haven't played in two years, I thought they were really outstanding," said Gee-Gees head coach Jen Boyd. "But we've got National Champions [Laval] coming in next week, so we have to be much better. That's the challenge with playing on this team, you have to be better every day."
"The girls put forth a great effort," said Grant. "The main thing here was just to go out and have fun. We've put in a lot of work over the past 18 months. They set me up, in the midfield especially. They were plowing girls over, so give all the credit to them, they put in the work."
Ondo scored the much-anticipated first try of the season in the third minute. She weaved her way down the right flank and find paydirt for the first time since 2019.
Another key moment came later in the match, when Tylo Borsboom exploded through a hole for a try. It was Borsboom's first match since 2018, having missed the 2019 campaign while rehabbing a serious knee injury.
"She hasn't played since her rookie year," said Boyd. "It's really nice to see her expressing herself out there. She's worked harder than almost everyone I've ever met, so it's nice seeing her get rewarded like that."
The Gee-Gees (1-0) have a tough test on the horizon, as the Laval Rouge & Or (1-0) are in town next week. The Rouge & Or won the 2019 U SPORTS National Championship, although Ottawa defeated them in the RSEQ Championship game earlier that season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Matt Anthony Field.
