Gee-Gees extend lead in the OUA East Standings after win vs second place Gaels.
September 22, 2018
The Gee-Gees women's soccer team earned a key victory on Saturday, taking down the Queen's Gaels by a 2-0 score in Kingston on Saturday. The win gives the no. 8 ranked Gee-Gees (7-1-1) a bit of breathing room at the top of the OUA East standings, with the no. 7 ranked Gaels (5-2-0) in second position.
Ottawa's Katherine Bearne opened the scoring on a free kick in the 40th minute from straight on, just outside of the 18-yard box. The senior midfielder powered her fourth goal of the season, continuing her excellent play on set pieces over the past two seasons.
The free kick was granted as a result of a foul on Delaney Rickert-Hall who once again proved a thorn in the opponent's side. Rickert-Hall also earned the penalty kick which led to the Gee-Gees second half goal as she was pursued into the box and taken down from behind. Théa Nour took the penalty for Ottawa, increasing the lead to 2-0 with 17 minutes left to play.
"Delaney is very good at shielding the ball and dribbling, and we were playing forward in the phase of play," notes Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "Delaney was able to take the ball, bring it into the box, and they just weren't able to deal with her."
"Defensively we were really good today and for me that was the biggest step forward," Johnson continues. "Our back line was terrific, our midfield didn't give them very much time to establish play, and our strikers worked hard on their backs so they were unable to build. I'm very proud of how hard we worked."
Margot Shore and Hillary Damman shared the clean sheet as Ottawa out-shot the Gaels by a 10-3 margin. The lone save of the day at the Garnet and Grey end was made in the dying minutes by Damman as she came out to collect a dangerous looking cross.
The Gee-Gees remain in Kingston to play the RMC Paladins (0-6-1) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
