The Gee-Gees hosted the University of New Brunswick Reds on Saturday afternoon. While the Gee-Gees got started with a 2-0 lead, the Reds were never out of the game, eventually proving why they're the reigning national champions.
"Playing against UNB you know it's going to be a really tough matchup," said Gee-Gees head coach Patrick Grandmaitre, "UNB is one of the top teams in the country, at times we were there, but at times we were chasing it too."
Bradley Chenier was the first on the board, scoring barely a minute into the game. Only moments later, great puck movement opened up the net for Mathieu Desgagnés to score another for the Gee-Gees.
The Reds made sure to add a goal of their own before the end of the period, but the Gee-Gees kept a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
The lead didn't last long. The Reds the controlled the second period, scoring within the first minute back on the ice. A pair of goals followed the first, and the Reds finished the period ahead of Gee-Gees 4-2.
The powerplay unit kept the Gee-Gees in it. Desgagnés brought the Gee-Gees back within one, but the Reds were quick to re-establish their two-goal lead at 5-3. Desgagnés found the back of the net on the powerplay again, earning a hat trick, and keeping it a one goal game.
"Desgagnés' scored a lot of goals last year, he's got a good one timer, and the guys keep finding him." Grandmaitre said, "We're happy [the powerplay is] working but we want other things to work too to put us in winning situations."
The Gee-Gees still have two weeks before their regular season gets started. Their first game is at home against UQTR on Oct. 6th.
