The Gee-Gees women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2018 regular season in emphatic fashion, defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs by a 5-0 score in Sudbury on Sunday. Transfer striker Mikayla Morton scored three times for Ottawa, while Margot Shore and Hillary Damman split the clean sheet.
Morton, who played previously with Memphis and led the Tigers with 26 points a year ago, scored the second Gee-Gees goal of the game on a close-range chip shot with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. She added the fourth and fifth markers in the second half, keeping Ottawa firmly in control. The Courtice, Ont., product substituted on for Ottawa shortly before scoring her first goal.
"It was great to see her on the field today and it was a fantastic start to her Gee-Gees career," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson.
Before any scoring had happened, Margot Shore gave the Gee-Gees a boost with a stellar save. The fourth-year keeper stretched up to tip shot headed for the corner away after a Voyageur broke in alone. Shortly afterwards, veteran striker Delaney Rickert-Hall opened the scoring with a rocket shot from a short angle and the Gee-Gees didn't look back.
"The fact that we scored first and that we scored early, I think helped players settle down in front of the goal," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "Yesterday we had a lot of early opportunities and didn't convert them and I think we tightened up. Overall we had more opportunities yesterday."
The third goal of the match came on a free kick by Katherine Bearne, just three minutes into the second half.
"Our contribution towards attacking play is team-oriented and we can certainly score in bunches," added Johnson. "I was also very happy again with our defensive play: backline, midfield, strikers – all performed well."
Ottawa stands in a four-way tie for first place in the OUA East after the opening weekend of play, with a 1-0-1 record. The team will be on the road again next week, at Trent (0-0-2) Saturday and UOIT (0-2-0) on Sunday.
