
Alberta beats UBC to claim bronze
The Alberta Pandas made sure they weren't leaving empty handed.
Abby Guezen recorded 15 kills and 14 digs, while Laila Johnston had nine kills and seven digs of her own, as the No. 1 Pandas secured the bronze medal with a 3-1 win (25-21, 28-30, 25-22, 25-18) over the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds at the 2025 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship Sunday afternoon at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.
First Team All-Canadian Justine Kolody added four kills on seven attempts with no errors for a .571 efficiency, to go along with 12 digs, five aces and 32 assists as the Pandas reached the podium following Saturday night's upset defeat at the hands of the No. 5 Montreal Carabins in the semifinal.
After splitting the first two sets, with the second frame going to several extra points, the Pandas took the final two sets to seal the victory.
Trinity Solecki and Kylee Glanville led the offence for UBC, with 14 and 13 kills respectively, and a combined 20 digs. Issy Robertshaw also had 11 digs, and Akash Grewal racked up six aces.
Alberta recorded a .194 hitting percentage in the match en route to their third medal in the last four years and fourth bronze in program history. UBC meanwhile hit .161, and missed the podium after coming into the tournament as back-to-back champions.
Alberta ends their season with an overall record of 23-4 in regular season, conference playoff and U SPORTS Championship action, while UBC concludes their campaign with a record of 19-8.
