(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS scored five times in the first period on route to a 10-2 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night, in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The Tigers opened the scoring on a goal by Barret Kirwin (Barrie. ON) just 47 seconds into the first period.
The REDS quickly tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Oliver Peer (Burlington, ON) at 2:24.
Benjamin Corbeil (Granby, QC), one of three REDS fresh off a gold medal performance with Team Canada at the FISU World University Games, in Torino, Italy, gave UNB the lead, scoring at 4:12 on the power-play.
The REDS extended their lead with goals by Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON), Cody Morgan (Gilford, ON), and Peter Reynolds (Fredericton, NB).
Colton Kammerer (Brooklin, ON) made it a 6-1 game at 6:38 of the second period.
Jax Dubois (Ottawa, ON) then scored a short-handed goal at 14:49.
Less than a minute later, the Tigers responded with Colin MacDougall (Carlisle, ON) finding the back of the net at 15:31.
In the final moments of the second, Drew Elliott (Musquash, NB) made it 7-2 for the home team.
In the third period, Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) and Camaryn Baber (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) added goals, pushing UNB into double digits.
UNB's other players returning from the FISU Games, Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) and Kale McCallum (Rothesay, NB) both had impressive nights. Richard made 17 saves on 19 shots to earn the win in the UNB net, while McCallum registered three assists.
Justin Nolet (Mississauga, ON) also had three assist for UNB.
The REDS outshot the Tigers 55-19.
UNB improves to 20-1-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) while the Tigers fall to 3-20-0-0.
Dal will be in Moncton on Saturday to face les Aigles Bleus. Game time is 7:00pm.
The REDS play host to the STFX X-Men in a Saturday matinee. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00pm.
