(HALIFAX, NS) UNB REDS' forward Jax Dubois (Ottawa, ON) had four points, two goals and two assists, leading U SPORTS' top-ranked team to an 8-1 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Friday night, in Halifax.
Eight minutes into the first period, REDS' defenceman Oscar Plandowski (Halifax, NS) stepped around a Huskies defender and fired a shot over the pad of Huskies netminder Ben West (Barrie, ON), putting the visitors up 1-0.
Moments later, Huskies forward Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) calmly walked into the slot and slipped the puck through the pads of UNB goalie Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC), but it didn't cross the goal line before being swept away by a REDS' defender.
With the first period winding down, Macauley Carson (Midhurst, ON) lengthened UNB's lead to 2-0.
Two minutes into the second, Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON) made it a 3-0 game.
Dubois then scored back-to-back goals as UNB went up 5-0. An Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON) power-play goal made it 6-0.
SMU's Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped on a breakaway, but Richard rose to the occasion and forced the shot wide.
The Huskies got onto the scoreboard less than a minute into the third period when Ben Boyd (Dartmouth, NS), on the edge of the REDS crease, tucked the puck into the net.
McGurn scored his second, with the teams playing four-on-four, beating netminder Justin Sumarah (Halifax, NS), who'd come on in relief of West, to make the score 7-1.
Sproule's second of the night rounded out the UNB scoring.
The REDS outshot the Huskies 50-22 with Sumarah and West each stopping 21 shots, while Richard turned away 21 for the win.
The Huskies' loss drops their record to 5-5-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL). The REDS are now 10-0-1-0 and remain atop the AUS standings. Both teams are back in action Saturday.
