Axewomen sweep Aigles Bleues, turn focus to Saint Mary's
The Acadia Axewomen defeated the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in straight sets, winning 3-0 in AUS women's volleyball action Saturday at Stu Aberdeen Court.
Acadia started strong in the opening set, building an early lead behind key contributions from Jenna Lake and Katie MacLean. Mia Lemay-Evans delivered two consecutive service aces at 9-5 to extend the lead, while Leah Weatherhead closed the set with a kill from Sophie Edgar to seal a 25-19 win.
The Axewomen continued their momentum in the second set, securing a 25-16 victory. Weatherhead sparked the team with three consecutive points, including an early service ace, while MacLean added key assists and a service ace of her own. Lemay-Evans remained a force at the net, contributing a kill and another ace to keep Acadia in control.
In the third set, Acadia dominated from the start. Wesley-Ann Bailey opened the scoring with a kill off a MacLean assist, while Alexia Lemay-Evans added two consecutive kills to push the lead to 7-3. Brianna Bourque closed the match in style, registering four straight points, including a service ace and a final kill from Weatherhead to secure a decisive 25-11 victory.
MacLean led the Axewomen with 30 assists, demonstrating her playmaking ability. Lemay-Evans was efficient offensively, recording 10 kills on 16 attempts with a .625 hitting percentage and no errors. Edgar anchored the defence with 15 digs, while Bourque posted a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, converting both of her attempts into kills.
For Moncton, Sophie Hédou led the way with 11 points, including eight kills and two service aces. Cassidy Martin recorded 17 assists and seven digs, while Angèle Turenne chipped in four kills and an ace. Sierra Sarty was Moncton's defensive leader with eight digs.
Acadia returns to action on Friday, Feb. 14, at home against Saint Mary's. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
