REDS Blank Axemen
(WOLFVILLE, NS) Peter Reynolds (Fredericton, NB) and Kale McCallum (Rothesay, NB) each had a goal and two assists and Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) made 19 saves as the UNB REDS shut-out the Acadia Axemen 5-0 Friday night, in Wolfville.
The REDS opened the scoring early in the first period with a power-play goal by McCallum.
Acadia's penalty kill worked tirelessly to keep the REDS in check for much of the night. Despite those efforts, UNB capitalized on their chances, with Reynolds and Drew Elliott (Musquash, NB) adding two more before the first period ended.
The Axemen showed some resilience in the second and third periods, but UNB's potent power-play struck again. Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) notched a goal mid-way through the second and Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON) rounded out the scoring in the third period, both on well-executed plays.
Acadia goalie Thomas Couture (Levis, QC) withstood a barrage of shots, turning away 29 of 34 attempts.
While UNB's special teams proved to be the difference, the Axemen showed flashes of promise with a fast-paced forecheck and determined defensive efforts.
Jax Dubois (Ottawa, ON) was 12-for-17 in the face-off circle while teammate Benjamin Corbeil (Granby, QC) was 7-for-10.
Acadia, now 2-3-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) is back in action Saturday when they host Moncton. The REDS improve to 5-0-0-0. They continue their Nova Scotia swing with a visit to Saint Mary's on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:00pm starts.
