X-Women play to weekend sweep over REDS
X-Women complete weekend sweep of REDS with commanding 71-51 win Saturday afternoon
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women completed their weekend sweep of the UNB REDS with a commanding 71-51 win on Coach K Court in on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams are already headed to the AUS playoffs, and the win pushes the X-Women into a tie with UNB in the standings.
UNB rookie guard Addie Mombourquette opened the scoring with a jumper and a free-throw, but the X-Women replied with a 12-2 run, capped off with a Reegan Bell triple, to pull ahead with three minutes left in the quarter. Strong shooting from the X-Women, along with 9 turnover points, saw the home team build a 21-9 lead after the first quarter.
The scoring slowed down a bit early in the second quarter, with both teams clamping down on defense. Things opened up a bit closer to halftime, and five straight points from Mombourquette followed by a triple from STFX's Jaya D'Souza to end the half made the score 40-23 in favor of the Blue and White.
The third quarter started off close, with the team's trading buckets for the first six minutes. UNB pushed to cut into the X lead, while also holding the X-Women to their lowest scoring quarter of the game, but were still down by 16 heading into the fourth.
Abby Mercer had four straight points for the X-Women as they opened the final stanza with an 8-3 run. D'Souza hit back-to-back triples late in the game, before checking out alongside fellow senior Ekaterina Karchevskaya.
Mombourquette was player of the game for the REDS, picking up 19 points and five rebounds. Ann Bastien chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
Shannon Neita nabbed STFX Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game honors, with 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block. Ali Oluyole dropped 14 points from the bench for the X-Women, while Karchevskaya had 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
The X-Women head to Newfoundland to finish off their season next weekend, with a pair of games against the Memorial Sea-Hawks, with the first set for Friday, February 21, at 6 p.m. The REDS have one game left to go, a matchup next Friday in Fredericton against the Acadia Axewomen at 6 p.m.
