X-Women power past Tigers, netting 99 points
The X-Women basketball team extended their win streak to three with a convincing 99-45 victory over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women basketball team extended their win streak to three with a convincing 99-45 victory over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night on Coach K Court.
With the win, the X-Women record moves to 6-5 while they picked up an important two points in the Atlantic University Sport standings.
Turnovers proved costly for the visitors, with STFX able to create 38 points from takeaways. At the same time, the X-Women got a big boost from 49 bench points.
Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game for the X-Women was Mali Straker (Yellowknife, NT), who lead all scorers with 15 points, including a trio of three pointers and a pair of rebounds. Shannon Neita (Toronto, ON) had 14 points for the Blue and White, while also adding 9 rebounds.
For the Tigers, player of the game honors went to Sydney Guker-Wickie (Kitchner, ON), who had eight points and three rebounds, while Kaitlyn Ferrier (Calgary, AB) dropped 11 points for the visitors.
The X-Women pulled ahead early, leading by eight after the first quarter at 25-16, and kept that momentum going for a 44-23 lead at halftime.
Kristine Cooper (Hamilton, ON) had a strong first half for the X-Women, shooting 5 for 8 while dropping 11 points, and three assists in the first 20 minutes, while picking off a handful of inbound passes from the Tigers. Replying for the Tigers early were Melina Collins (Halifax, NS) with 7, and Mercy Olugu (Halifax, NS) with six.
The Tigers showed signs of a comeback in the third quarter, hitting a couple of threes early, but the X-Women weathered the storm and answered back with 18 straight points. The home side continued to dominate in the final quarter, pushing to hit the century mark in points.
The X-Women return to action next Saturday, January 18, when they visit the Acadia Axewomen for a 6 p.m. matchup. The Tigers are also on the road next weekend, when they take on the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown at 6 p.m. on Saturday night.
