REDS sweep Axewomen in Fredericton
The Acadia Axewomen battled hard in a tough 3-1 match against the UNB REDS in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball on Saturday at the Richard J. Currie Center in Fredericton, NB.
The Axewomen took an exciting opening set 26-24, showcasing resilience and skill in a thrilling comeback. After falling behind 23-15, Acadia's Katie MacLean (Humboldt, SK) served nine consecutive points to level the score at 24-24, before the Axewomen clinched the set with a final push.
UNB managed to regroup and edge out the Axewomen in the next three sets, winning 25-20, 25-19, and 25-18. Throughout the match, Acadia displayed moments of brilliance and stayed competitive, especially in the second set, where they pushed to close the score at 23-20 before UNB ultimately secured the win.
In the third set, Acadia started strong and kept the score close, but UNB managed a few critical runs to take the lead. The Axewomen fought to stay within reach but couldn't stop UNB's momentum.
The fourth set saw Acadia respond quickly to early REDS leads, leveling the score at 3-3 and keeping up the pressure with solid defensive and offensive plays. Although the Axewomen made a late push, UNB held on to close out the set.
Jenna Lake (Conception Bay South, NL) led Acadia with an impressive 17 kills and 14 digs, while Katie MacLean tallied 40 assists. For the REDS, Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC) contributed 16 kills, and Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) had 17 digs.
The Axewomen will regroup as they prepare to face Dalhousie on Friday in another exciting AUS matchup.
