Huskies Beat REDS
(HALIFAX, NS) Despite a game-high 31 points from Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON), the UNB REDS fell 86-66 to the Saint Mary's Huskies, in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Saturday evening in Halifax.
Along with her massive offensive outburst, Butts also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, 12 of them defensively.
The Huskies took control of the game early on, outscoring the REDS two-for-one in the opening quarter and taking a 34-17 lead after ten minutes.
In the second quarter, SMU outscored the REDS again, but at a lesser pace.
UNB trailed 55-35 at the half-time break.
The second half was relatively even, but UNB could never chip into the Huskies lead and the home team won by 20.
Addie Mombourquette (Fredericton, NB) and Lillian Fuller (Dartmouth, NS) provided some help for Butts, scoring 10 points each.
The UNB bench contributed just four points.
Clara Gasgoine (Dartmouth, NS) led the Huskies with 21 points while Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) and Lucy Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) each dropped 17, Fraser on 5-for-7 shooting from three-point range.
The win extends the Huskies' season-opening winning streak to seven games.
UNB is now 3-and-5.
The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday when they host STFX.
The REDS return home to host UPEI on Friday, UNB's final game before the holiday break. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
