Wolfville, NS - The Acadia Axemen claimed a 4-2 victory over the StFX X-Men in AUS men's hockey action on Friday night.
Acadia set the tone early, getting out to a 2-0 lead first period lead. Peyton Hoyt opened the scoring at 11:54 with assists from Brady Burns and Conor Shortall. Later in the period, the Axemen capitalized on the power play as Ethan Ernst extended the lead at 17:00, with helpers from Burns and Tyler Deline.
The Axemen continued to dominate special teams in the second frame. Adam McMaster scored another power-play goal just 4:06 in, with assists from Liam Kidney and Brendan Sellan, pushing the lead to 3-0.
StFX responded with determination as Logan Chisholm got the X-Men on the board at 10:46 with a power-play goal, assisted by Simon Motew and Cole Stewart. Late in the period, Raegan Wiles pulled StFX within one, scoring at 17:51 with Chisholm providing the assist.
Both teams played a tight defensive game in the final frame until Acadia sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from Brendan Tomilson at 19:34.
Acadia's Brady Burns was named first star and player of the game. His teammates Marc Boudreau and Brendan Tomilson at were the second and third stars.
Axemen goaltender Thomas Couture picked up win in nets with 30 saves on the night. The Axemen held a slight 33-32 edge in shots.
Lucas Pfeil was tagged with the loss for the X-Men, posting 29 saves.
The X-Men will aim to regroup for their next matchup Saturday night on home ice against the Saint Mary's Huskies. Puck drop if 7:00 pm.
Acadia is back in action on Friday, January 17th when they host the UNB REDS.
