REDS Complete Weekend Sweep Of Sea-Hawks
(FREDERICTON, NB) Wearing their pink jerseys and led by fourth year forward Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON) the UNB REDS raced out to a huge early lead and then hung on to beat the Memorial Sea-Hawks 81-70 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Saturday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Butts, named Tim Horton's Player of the Game, had an incredible afternoon.
She led all scorers with 36-points and added a game-high 14 rebounds and five assists.
The game was the finale of a two-game weekend series and part of UNB's Stewart-McKelvey Think Pink Week in support of U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure efforts on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society.
The home team dominated the opening quarter, limiting the Sea-Hawks to just five points and leading 22-5 after ten minutes.
In the second, the visitors showed signs of life, outscoring the REDS in the quarter, to trail 41-26 at the half.
The Sea-Hawks outscored the REDS in the third quarter as well, trailing by just 10, 60-50, after 30 minutes.
Memorial did trim the UNB lead to single digits in the final quarter, but the REDS held on, winning by 11.
Along with Butts' monster afternoon, Addie Mombourquette scored 18 points and added eight rebounds while Ann Bastien (Terrebonne, QC) had nine points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench.
Alyssa Jenkins (St. John's, NL) led the Sea-Hawks with 22 points.
Evan McLaughlin (Beaverdam, NB) added 13 and Brooklyn Martens (Caronport, SK) grabbed 11 rebounds.
The win, UNB's fourth straight, improves their record to 9-7 while the Sea-Hawks lost their ninth in a row to fall to 1-15.
The Sea-Hawks next action will be February 14th when they visit Charlottetown and the UPEI Panthers.
The REDS will be in the Prince Edward Island capital to take on the Panthers on February 7th. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
