Gascoigne, Beaumont lead Huskies to 65-62 win over Sea-Hawks

HALIFAX, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 65-62 in Atlantic University Sport Women's Basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

The Sea-Hawks nearly came back late to upset the Huskies, thanks to forward Eavan McLaughlin (Fredericton, NB) who had a career game, pouring in 29 points, 10 rebounds and three steals off the bench, but the veteran leadership of fifth year Huskies Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) and Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) held off the late charge.

Saint Mary's started the game on fire, opening up a quick 8-0 lead after back-to-back buckets from Beaumont, and a Gascoigne three-pointer pushed the lead to 11-2 at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter.

But the Sea-Hawks cut into the lead thanks to back-to-back three pointers from guard Brooke LeDevehat (Mount Pearl, NL), and contributions off the bench from Eavan McLaughlin, who scored four straight points as part of a 14-0 Sea-Hawks run to close the quarter with an 18-15 lead.

MacLaughlin picked up the second quarter where she left off, hitting a three-pointer to extend the Sea-Hawks lead to 21-15. But Saint Mary's cut back into the lead, with a three from guard Aki Kobayashi (Osaka, Japan) restoring the 25-23 lead. The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the quarter, with Clara Gascoigne stealing the ball and scoring an and-one lay-in to give the Huskies a 36-33 lead at the half.

The Huskies were led by Clara Gascoigne's 16 first-half points, with the fifth year guard adding five rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Forward Lucy Beaumont chipped in 12 points and six rebounds for the Huskies.

The Sea-Hawks were led by the sharpshooting of Brooke LeDevehat, who hit for 16 points including four threes, while reserve guard Eavan McLaughlin chipped in 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

The back and forth continued to open the third quarter, with a three-pointer from Huskies guard Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS), but McLaughlin responded with another three to cut the lead to 41-40. McLaughlin poured in eight points in the quarter, but a late lay-up from Lucy Beaumont gave the Huskies a 51-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter began with the Huskies hitting three three-pointers from guard Julia Black (Halifax, NS), Beaumont and Kobayashi, opening up a 60-48 lead with 7:15 remaining. But the Huskies offence went cold, as the Sea-Hawks went on a 14-5 run to finish the game, with guard Serena Phillips (St. John's, NL) hitting a three-pointer to cut it to 65-62 late. But that would be as close as the Sea-Hawks comeback would come, as the Huskies were able to kill out the clock and secure their fourth straight win.

Huskies guard Clara Gascoigne was named Player of the Game, stuffing the stat sheet with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks. Forward Lucy Beaumont chipped in an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double, while guard Aki Kobayashi added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The Sea-Hawks were led by Eavan McLaughlin who had a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Brooke LeDevehat chipped in 16 points – all in the first half, while forward Brooklyn Martens patrolled the glass with 16 rebounds and added six points.

The Huskies win improves their record to 4-0 on the season, while the Sea-Hawks fall to 0-4.
