REDS Bounce Capers
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS began the second half of their 2024-25 Atlantic University Sport women's basketball season with a 65-52 win over the Cape Breton Capers on Friday night at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON) led the REDS with 17 points and 13 rebounds and was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Ann Bastien (Terrebonne, QC) also recorded a double-double with a dozen points and a dozen rebounds.
Addie Mombourquette (Fredericton, NB) dropped 12 points and Zoe Olscamp (Stratford, PE) had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Kiara Letlow (Toronto, ON) led the Capers with 18 points and an equal number of rebounds, both game highs.
Letlow's 18 rebounds boosts her career total to 1003, good for second on the AUS all-time rebounds list. She needs just 20 more to break the conference's current mark of 1022, set by former Caper Alison Keough.
Hailey MacLeod (Marion Bridge, NS) added eight points and eight rebounds for CBU.
The REDS built a 12-point lead in the second quarter, but the Capers rallied late, trailing by just six, 28-22, at the half.
The REDS exerted some dominance in the second half, pulling away in the fourth quarter to win by 13.
The win improves UNB's record to 4-6 while the Capers are now 7-3.
The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon in the second game of their weekend series. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
