X-Men drop 6-2 game to REDS
Despite getting out to a first period lead, X-Men drop 6-2 game to REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) - REDS captain Colton Kammerer (Brooklin, ON) had a goal and two assists to lead UNB to a 6-2 victory over the STFX X-Men in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Kammerer was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
"It was a slow start for our team, but we did a good job in building as the game progressed," said Kammerer.
Connor Roberts (Owen Sound, ON) netted the lone goal of the first period, for the X-Men, at 14:44.
In the second period, the reigning USPORTS champions found themselves in an unfamiliar position, having to come from behind.
"We are a very confident group," said Kammerer. "We knew we had to stick to our game plan and we didn't have a doubt that we could take the lead."
The REDS wasted little time in the second period, with Peter Reynolds (Fredericton, NB) firing a shot high into the top corner of the X-Men net at 2:06 to tie the game.
Less than a minute later, the REDS took the lead on a goal by Drew Elliott (Musquash, NB) at 2:58.
Kammerer's goal, late in the second, extended UNB's lead to 3-1.
Michael Petizian (Mississauga, ON), Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), and Sam McGinley (Calgary, AB) scored third period goals for UNB while Zack Trott (Mulmur, ON) scored for the X-Men.
Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) made 16 saves on 18 shots in the UNB net while Lucas Pfeil (Owen Sound, ON) stopped 32 of the 37 shots he saw.
The REDS are back in action on Friday night, traveling to Moncton to take on the Aigles Bleus. Puck drop scheduled for 7:00pm.
Meanwhile, the X-Men will head to Halifax on Thursday night to face the Saint Mary's Huskies. That game is set for a 7:00pm start.
