(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS earned a 5-2 victory over the STFX X-Men in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The visitors opened the scoring on a goal by Patrick Leaver (Perth, ON) and the X-Men took that lead to the first intermission.
Oliver Peer (Burlington, ON) put the REDS on the board with a goal at 3:17 of the second period.
What followed was a dominant offensive performance as Jax Dubois (Ottawa, ON), Kale McCallum (Rothesay, NB), and Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON) added three goals to increase the UNB lead to 4-1.
In the third, X responded late with Charlie Callaghan's (Toronto, ON) goal at 18:31, but an empty-net goal by Camaryn Baber (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) with nine seconds to play sealed the victory for the REDS.
Peter Reynolds (Fredericton, NB) and Nicolas Savoie (Dieppe, NB) both had two assists for UNB.
The REDS outshot STFX 40-19 before a sold out Aitken Centre crowd of 3374.
With the win, the REDS maintain their spot at the top of the AUS standings with a 21-1-1-0 record (W-L-OTL-SOL), while STFX is tied for third with a 13-9-1-1 record.
Next up for the X-Men, a home date against Dalhousie on Wednesday.
The REDS play host to the UPEI Panthers on Tuesday night. Game time is 7:00pm. This game was originally scheduled for January 10th.
