Delorey leads with double-doubles in win over X-Women
ANTIGONISH, N.S. — The Acadia Axewomen secured a 74-66 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women on Saturday at Coach K Court in front of 547 fans. Acadia outscored StFX in three of four quarters to clinch the win.
Samantha Russell led the Axewomen with 23 points, shooting 8-for-20 from the field, while adding nine rebounds and three steals. Sarah Delorey recorded a double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 18 rebounds, 14 of them defensive. Bianca Helmig contributed 11 points, six assists, and two steals in a well-rounded performance.
StFX's E. Karchevskaya was the game's top scorer for the X-Women, with 16 points, six field goals, and four free throws, along with five assists. Shannon Neita added 12 points and four steals, while Ayla White also chipped in 12 points, five baskets, and three rebounds. Kristine Cooper was a force on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds and scoring six points, and Laia Torrent Blanco added two steals to the defensive effort.
StFX held a slim 20-17 lead after the first quarter, but Acadia turned the tide in the second, outscoring the X-Women 23-18. The Axewomen's strong showing at the free-throw line—11-for-12—helped them gain a narrow advantage heading into halftime.
Acadia took control in the third quarter, outscoring StFX 24-12. The Axewomen's defense forced key turnovers while dominating the boards, with Russell leading the charge offensively.
In the fourth quarter, Acadia maintained their lead, edging StFX 16-10 despite struggling with their three-point shooting. Defensive rebounding and forced turnovers helped seal the victory.
The Axewomen return to action on Friday, Jan. 24, when they host the UPEI Panthers at 6 p.m. in their Shoot for the Cure game.
