The Gee-Gees women's basketball team picked up two wins on their final road swing of 2023, extending their win streak to eight.
Starting the weekend in Toronto, the Gee-Gees earned a 71-57 win over the Lions before heading down for a 62-51 win against the Marauders in Hamilton.
Ottawa outpaced York in Friday night's matchup, outshooting the Lions by 17.4% from the field. Ariane Saumure had a standout game, putting away 17 points, six assists, six steals, and five rebounds. Natsuki Szczokin and Melina De lulio were both in double figures, adding 14 points each.
McMaster proved to be a formidable opponent, starting the game with a seven-point run on Saturday night. The Gee-Gees and Marauders exchanged control over the game throughout the opening half, even going point for point in the second quarter.
With only a 28-27 lead going into the third quarter, the Gee-Gees looked to kick things up a notch. Emily Payne put her hands up for a crucial block, and Nadine Katumbayi found Szczokin wide open from beyond the arch to get momentum in Ottawa's favour.
The Gee-Gees created a double-digit lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Maruaders 24-11. Ottawa drove the score up to 52-38 before the third quarter ended.
Things slowed down for the duration of the fourth quarter, and the Gee-Gees came away with a 62-51 win.
Szczokin was at the helm of the Gee-Gees victory with 18 points and five rebounds. Victoria Brideau tallied an impressive 12 rebounds and seven points, while Allie McCarthy contributed 12 points and three rebounds.
The Gee-Gees have one final game before the end of the semester. They'll be meeting with their crosstown rivals, the undefeated Carleton Ravens on Dec. 6 for a Wednesday evening battle. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. and tickets are available https://teams.geegees.ca/tickets.
