The Ottawa Gee-Gees women's basketball team pushed their win streak to six consecutive wins when they defeated Nipissing Lakers 73-48 and Laurentian Voyageurs 71-51 this weekend in Northern Ontario.
On Friday against the Lakers, the Gee-Gees overcame an early deficit to power to a 27-8 second quarter and earn a dominant win in North Bay.
Led by a 16-point and eight-assist effort from star guard Natsuki Szczokin, Ottawa hit 11 three-pointers on the night to seal the win.
Fifth-year guard Alana Renon made her season debut from injury, scoring 11 points and tallying five rebounds off the bench. Fellow fifth-year, Melina De Iulio rounded out players in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds on the night.
Shifting gears to Sudbury the following night, the Gee-Gees once again found themselves fighting out of an early hole against Laurentian.
A big effort in the second quarter brought Ottawa back into the lead, but the Voyageurs eventually rallied in the third quarter, holding the Gee-Gees to just seven points in the frame. A fourth quarter explosion of 25 points eventually put the game out of reach and closed the weekend with a second win.
Szczokin was sensational once again with 23 points and five steals, while hometown hero Ariane Saumure impressed with 17 points and an eye-popping seven steals to help vault her team to victory.
Starters Emily Payne and Allie McCarthy also scored in double figures with Payne finishing with 11 points and McCarthy adding 10.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will take to the road for matchups with York on Friday night and McMaster on Saturday night. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m. and will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
