REDS Rally Past Sea-Hawks
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS fought from behind to beat the Memorial Sea-Hawks 93-78 Friday evening, in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The game was the first of a two-game weekend series between the teams and part of UNB's Stewart-McKelvey Think Pink Week, in support of U SPORTS' Shoot for the Cure effort.
The REDS spent much of the opening quarter playing catch-up.
Down 10-2 in the early moments, UNB rode first year RED Zoe Olscamp's (Stratford, PE) seven-point quarter to a brief lead late and trailed by just three, 22-19, after ten minutes.
Olscamp continued to pace the REDS in the second quarter, scoring 10 more to keep her team close. UNB trailed 43-39 at the half.
The REDS surged to life in the second half.
McKinley Bezanson (Hantsport, NS) hit a three-pointer just ahead of the third quarter buzzer and UNB led 63-56 headed to the final frame.
Lillian Fuller (Dartmouth, NS) scored three of her 14 second half points in the final quarter, one in which the REDS piled up 30 points on route to their 15 point win.
Fuller, who finished the night with 20 points, was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON) led the home team with a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds.
Olscamp finished with 19 points while Addie Mombourquette (Fredericton, NB) dropped a dozen.
Brooke LeDevehat (Mount Pearl, NL) led the Memorial effort with 21 points.
Eavan McLaughlin (Beaverdam, NB) added 13 and Carly Norris (Middle Cove, NL) grabbed 10 rebounds.
With the win, the REDS are now 8-7 and in a three-way tie for third in the AUS standings.
The Sea-Hawks are 1-14 and sit eighth.
The Sea-Hawks and REDS will meet again Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
