REDS Complete Sweep Of Capers
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS completed a weekend sweep of the Cape Breton Capers Saturday afternoon, scoring a 71-66 Atlantic University Sport women's basketball victory.
First-year REDS' forward Zoe Olscamp (Stratford, PE) led the home team's balanced attack with 13 points.
Ann Bastien (Terrebonne, QC) contributed 12 points and nine rebounds and was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Cape Breton's Kiara Letlow (Toronto, ON) led all scorers with 24 points.
Each team held the lead in a tightly contested first quarter, but it was the Capers who held a slim 24-22 lead after ten minutes.
Behind some solid defensive play, UNB limited the Capers to just 10 second quarter points and led the visitors 42-34 at the half.
The REDS held their lead in the third quarter and were up 56-46 after 30 minutes.
The Capers staged a late rally, but it wasn't enough, and the REDS won by five.
Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON) had a double-double for the REDS, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Maheva Ngassam (Saint Hubert, QC) pulled down 14 rebounds and Addie Mombourquette (Fredericton, NB) dropped a dozen points.
Hailey MacLeod (Marion Bridge, NS) double-doubled in the Capers loss. She scored 17 and had 14 rebounds.
With the win, UNB improves to 5-and-6.
The REDS now prepare to host the Saint Mary's Huskies, Friday at 6:00pm.
The Capers see their record drop to 7-and-4. They return home to host Acadia on Friday. That game is also scheduled for a 6:00pm start.
