Capers edge Axemen 69-65
(SYDNEY, N.S.)- The Cape Breton University Capers improved to 4-0 at Sullivan Fieldhouse with their tight 69-65 victory over the Acadia Axemen on Saturday night.
Meshack Lufile was providing problems for the Axemen throughout the game, scoring 21 points and bringing in 7 rebounds as he led the Capers to victory.
Lufile was helped by clutch performances from Seth Amoah and Vishal Banipal.
Amoah had 6 of his 13 points come in the fourth quarter, while Banipal's 8 points all came in the final 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, Sean Stogua had a well-rounded performance in the loss for Acadia.
The veteran point guard had 19 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds as he kept the Capers on their heels all game long.
The Axemen's leading scorer, Shaquille Smith, struggled on Saturday, going just 3-13 from the field for 8 points.
The Capers' huge second quarter, paced by 12 points from Meschack Lufile gave them an 8 point lead heading into halftime.
However, a switch to zone by Acadia in the third quarter created problems for the Capers offensively. CBU shot an ugly 20 percent from the field during the third quarter and escaped down just 53-50.
The teams traded blows in the fourth before CBU gained control in the final two minutes and cruised to a win.
The Capers now move to 5-6 on the season, and will look to be more consistent going forward.
However, the Capers will have the comfort of what Lufile called "the best fans in the AUS" when they face their rival, StFX this upcoming Tuesday at Sullivan Fieldhouse.
The Axemen will shift focus to their game against St. Mary's at home at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
