X-Women Power-ed to victory over Mounties

Sackville, NB – The CIS No. 6 ranked X-Women bettered their lead atop the AUS conference to 19-1-0 with a 4-3 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties (6-13-1) Sunday afternoon.

The X-Women were led by forward Kara Power who scored a hat trick in the game. Her linemate Alex Normore had four assists in the game.

With the assists, Normore passes the CIS all-time career assists record and becomes the new leader. The previous national asisst record was held by Tarin Podloski of Alberta who had 122. Normore currently has 126 to her credit.

Last weekend she broke the StFX all-time career scoring record. With 204 points to date, Normore is fourth overall in CIS career scoring.  

Power's first goal came just 1:54 into the game, as she connected with Normore and Schyler Campbell. The trio then connected again at 4:12 as Power notched her second goal to give the X-Women an early 2-0 lead in the game.

Sarah Bujold, from Daley Oddy and Normore scored on the power play at 11:26.

Amanda Volcko got the Mounties on the board at the 16 minute mark as Lindsay James and Megan Cameron assisted.

Shots were 10-8 in the first period as the X-Women held a 3-1 advantage.

The Mounties came back and scored just over four minutes into the second period as Jennifer Bell connected from Kristen Cooze and Shelby Colton.

Power gave the X-Women back their two-goal lead with a shorthanded marker at 7:51. Normore had the lone assist on the play.

Emily vanDiepen scored for the Mounties at 8:59 from Colten and Kelsey MacDougall as the second period closed out 4-3 in favor of the visiting X-Women.

Shots favored the Mounties 14-10 in the middle frame.

Despite being outshot 13-5 in the third period, the X-Women hung on and did not allow the Mounties to score the equalizer.

Sojung Shin picked up the win in the StFX nets with 32 saves. Katie O'Brien, with 21 saves on the afternoon was tagged with the loss for Mount Allison.

The Mounties will next see action on Thursday, January 29th when they travel to Moncton to face-off against the Aigles Bleues.

The X-Women travel to Halifax on Wednesday evening to play the Saint Mary's Huskies then will host Moncton on Saturday, January 31st. Game time is 2:00 pm at the Charles V. Keating Centre.
