X-Women edge Acadia 74-73 to hand No. 6-ranked Axewomen first loss of the season

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - The CIS No. 6-ranked Acadia Axewomen basketball team suffered their first loss of the regular season as they were edged 74-73 by the StFX X-Women Wednesday night in Wolfville.

With 14.5 seconds remaining in the game and the ball in Acadia's possession, the Axewomen were unable to nail two points to grab the win as the ball bounced out of several Acadia hands after an attempted layup by Acadia's Rachel Savage.

The X-Women trailed for the first half, working back from a 26-13 deficit in the first quarter and ending the half down 44-31. Acadia's Emily Nkosi led all players with 17 first half points and veteran guard Lindsay Harris added ten.

StFX's Kolbi Roper caught on fire in the second half, netting 17 points to push the X-women to a 20-12 third quarter win and closing the gap to 56-51 after three frames.

Jocelyn Moore sank the go-ahead shot to give StFX a 62-61 lead early in the fourth quarter.

During the final five minutes of the of regulation time, both teams would tie five times before heading into the final 32 seconds when Kolbi Roper, named the Subway Player of the Game, laid the ball in the hoop for the fifth tie and also drew a foul on the play. Roper's made free throw nudged the X-Women ahead by a point at 74-73 and the rest was history as the visitors improved to 4-3 on the season.

Roper finished the game 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Acadia's Emily Nkosi led the Axewomen with 28 points. Lindsay Harris added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Acadia was 36.8% from the floor and 27% from three-point range, while the X-Women posted a 51.7% second half field goal percentage and finished 43.1% for the night.

The Axewomen drop to 5-1 with their first loss of the regular season.

Note: Leading scorer Kristy Moore left the game in the first half with a ankle injury
