Axewomen sweep season series with 3-1 win over CBU

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen volleyball team extend their winning streak to two with a 3-1 win over the winless Cape Breton Capers. Acadia improves to 3-4 within conference play and 3-8 overall including the AUS-RSEQ interlock.

Senior middle Kristen Bolduc led the Axewomen with three blocks,  11 kills and posting a hitting efficiency of 0.273. Bolduc's performance rewarded her with the Subway Player of the Game honour.

Acadia flew out of the blocks in the first set, pushing to a 14-6 lead on kills by Ameilia Grail, Sarah Ross and Kristen Bolduc.  Bolduc capped the 25-13 win with her fourth kill of the set.

An 11-3 Acadia lead in the second set was highlighted by Bolduc again, who hammered home four kills in the Axewomen's early breakout. Acadia would eventually wrap up the second game with a 25-11 win.

Cape Breton rallied in the third frame, keeping pace until a 8-8 tie when Capers Chantelle Zawila, Sarah Ferguson and Ryle Etherington clubbed three kills in a row to give Cape Breton a 12-9 edge. The Capers held onto the lead, despite a late set rally by Acadia, posting a 25-19 game win.

The eventual final set was peppered with attack and service errors but the Axewomen managed to pull away at the 13-10 mark to give Acadia a 25-14 win and 3-1 match victory.

Head Coach Michelle Wood had mixed feelings about the weekend match against Cape Breton "I'm very happy with our ability to control unforced errors in sets 1,2 and 4. I'm disappointed that they lacked the consistency in set 3, taking for granted the outcome of the match."

Wood noted that this week's coming match against Dalhousie would be a good challenge for her team. "With a match versus Dalhousie on Friday, we will focus on our preparation and what we have control over, going in with the expectation that their will be some long rallies".

Cape Breton's Chantelle Zawila was named the Caper's Subway Player of the Game. Zawila had a team high 8 kills, while Allana Rendell recorded 11 digs and 14 assists.

First year outside hitter Sarah Ross along with teammates Meg Rector and Amelia Gray each had 11 kills. Ross and defensive stand-out Hillary Monette had 11 and 13 digs respectively.

The Axewomen, who sit fourth in the AUS standings, head to Halifax this Friday to take on the second place Dalhousie Tigers at 7pm, while the Capers return home to host the first place and CIS No. 10 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday night.
