Acadia rugby squad remain undefeated

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The CIS No. 5 ranked Acadia Axewomen rugby team improved to 2-0 with a convincing win over the now 1-1 Saint Mary's Huskies. Thirty nine unanswered points was the story of the evening as the Axewomen rolled to a 56-5 victory.

The Huskies, who defeated UPEI last week in their season opener, fell behind 12-0 after one half. Second year prop Natalie Silver opened the scoring at the 24th minute of the first half. Converted by Emilie Chiasson, Chiasson added her first of two tries to give Acadia a 12 point lead after one frame.

Acadia's Allison Jordan, named the Subway Player of the Game, started the ball rolling of five unanswered trys. The senior lock/8-man pulled together two trys including her first at the 30 minute mark of the second half.

Emilie Chiasson, and Janna Slevinsky recorded two trys, while teammates Veronique Russell, Kristine Lovatt and Maddie Fray all added a try each to the total.

The lone try for the Huskies came from Rhiannon MacDonald with eleven minutes remaining in the game.

Axewoman head coach Matthew Durant was not happy with the opening half and was frank with her players during the intermission. "We definitely overcame a blunderous first half. We didnt have a solid week of practice because I think they were so focused on the win over StFX. I had some strong words at the half and we came out and executed like we knew we could".

When asked how the team played compared to their win over StFX last weekend, Durant was frank. "Our centres played a great game against X and in the first half we didnt play as strong as we are capable of. We are lucky that today we could make mistakes and get away with it. We know we are a good team and we need to get better. We tackled too high, ran too high and were too high in the ruck. We got beat in rucking today and we need to improve on this."

The Axewomen will play UNB club team in exhibition this Sunday at 2pm before their next AUS conference game scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd versus St. Thomas.
