Soccer Axemen drop second loss in a row

WOLFVILLE N.S. – The Acadia Axemen, coming off their first loss of the season to first place UNB, faced the 1-1-1 StFX X-men in a Friday night game under the lights of Raymond field. A goal from Jordan Roberts midway through the first half would be the lone goal and game winner in a 1-0 decision in favour of the X-men.

St F.X. applied the pressure early and controlled the tempo, with the exception of a few fast-paced opportunities for Acadia.

Midway through the first half, second-year midfielder Michael Tait took a corner kick for X and in the resulting scurry Roberts put foot to ball and found the back of the net, putting StFX up 1-0.

The 1-0 StFX lead would remain as they headed into halftime. Acadia picked up their intensity in the second half and matched that of the X-men but could not get past Subway Player of the Game keeper Sam Hutchison allowing StFX to post a 1-0 win over Acadia.

Rookie midfielder Ryan Parris was the Subway Player of the Game for Acadia.

Hutchison saved nine shots in the victory for the X-men while third year keeper Andrew MacRae saved ten shots for the Axemen.

Head Coach Findlay MacRae was disappointed in the play by his team. "I am very disappointed in our passing today. Overall defending and work rate was good but many players kept giving the ball away". Adding, "We played hard but not smart".

The Axemen drop to 3-2-0 with their second loss in a row and hang onto second place in the AUS standings, while StFX improve to 2-1-1 and trail Mt. Allison in fourth place with a game in hand. Acadia will face Memorial at home Sunday afternoon while St F.X. heads home to host Dalhousie on Saturday.
