Laurentian hands Axewomen exhibition home game loss

WOLFVILLE N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen fell to the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs 55-41 in their first of two preseason games.

In the first quarter, both teams displayed impressive defense and struggled to score.

Acadia trailed 12-8 at the end of the frame due in part to the strong play of the Voyageurs starting five, which contained four veteran players.

A 9-0 Laurentian run stretched the Voyageur lead in the second quarter. Third year guard Aprille Deus ended the run with the help of Alexandra Berry who also poured in 4 points in the second for the Axewomen as they closed the Laurentian lead to 26-20 after one half.

In the third frame, the Voyageurs showed their seniority and patiently stretched their lead to nine points while taking a 41-32 advantage into the final quarter despite a slow start. The lone highlight in the third for the Axewomen was eventual Subway Player of the Game, Deus, who scored all 12 third quarter points for Acadia and finished with 16 on the night.

The Axewomen kept the score close but could not catch the veteran Voyageurs and fell 55-41 at the final buzzer.

Laurentian was paced by Subway player of the Game, fourth year forward Devanae Bryce who shot 7-13 from the floor and recorded a double double with 10 rebounds and 16 points.

Mary Scott had 14 points and Danielle Harris had 12 for the Voyageurs.

Berry added 10 points for the Axewomen and despite shooting 1-16 from the field, Emily Macleod added six points.

Acadia will take on Laurier this Friday as part of the Homecoming Weekend events.
