Capers and Axewomen end in scoreless draw

WOLFVILLE N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen (5-0-6) took on the Cape Breton Capers (5-4-1) in their final home game of the regular season to wrap up Homecoming Weekend at Raymond Field.  Prior to the start if the game Acadia honoured their seven graduating players, who all proved to be instrumental in keeping the Capers scoreless is a 0-0 draw.

Acadia came out aggressive to start the game, using a number of double-team scenarios to put the Capers on edge. Acadia aggressively tried to get to the ball first and pressure the Capers into errors and both teams had opportunities to score before the half came to a close but neither found the back of the net.

With the score 0-0, the Capers found their footing and started the second half strong, spending the first eight minutes in the Axewomen's end before Acadia was able to clear the ball.

Cape Breton and Acadia went head to head for the rest of the matchup with neither team able to break through the other's defensive curtain. Second year fullback, Candace Conrad, was the Subway Player of the Game for the Axewomen and was a key part of her team's defensive line that kept the Capers scoreless.

"It was a great competitive match - like two boxers slugging at each other. Obviously we wanted to win instead of draw but with both teams fighting so hard you can tell playoffs are around the corner", pointed out head coach Amit Battra.  Batra added, "If there is one thing we always did it was fight and so there was no better way to recognize our seniors than to have our last home game played with the type of intensity it was played with today."

Midfielder Tamara Brown was the Subway Player of the Game for Cape Breton, using her quickness in midfield to try to push pass Acadia time after time.

Fifth year Axewomen keeper Caroline Wood recorded her fifth shutout of the season. Capers veteran keeper Tiffany O'Donnell also notched her third shutout of the season.

Acadia travels to Sackville to take on Mount Alison and wrap up their regular season on Friday while Cape Breton heads home to take on StFX Wednesday night.
