WolfPack Women’s Basketball: Unbeaten Weekend over UNBC

Kamloops, BC — The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack are unbeaten after their opening weekend of play in Canada West women’s basketball.

The WolfPack opened the 2014-15 season with back to back victories over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. On Saturday (November 8) at the Tournament Capital Centre, the WolfPack won 82-39.  It was their second big victory in as many nights over UNBC.

“The game is about us playing proper basketball,” said WolfPack head coach Scott Reeves when asked about coaching in a game where the score was so lopsided. “The score becomes irrelevant. You have jobs to do. You have responsibilities based on the scouting reports.  We still have to be tight with our cuts and take care of the basketball.  At this level, it is not about coaching the score, it is more coaching your players and get them to work hard and become better.  Doesn’t matter who is on the floor or who they are playing.”

Thompson Rivers led 21-5 after the first quarter and led 38-14 at the half.  TRU outscored UNBC 44-25 in the second half.

“Just the way we are gelling with our offense,” Reeves said about what he liked from his team in this game and this weekend. “UNBC works hard. They have good athletes and they have size.  They make you run your stuff efficiently.  I am not taking anything away from their effort. I liked the way our offense is coming. There is more flow to it.”

The Pack were led by Emily Vilac (first year, forward, Kamloops, BC).  Vilac was named the TRU Bookstore/McDonalds Leader of the Pack Player of the Game.  She had 13 points and three rebounds.

“She is nice at 6’2”,” Reeves explains. “She is long and can hit the three.  She is a developing big player. Sometimes those types of athletes take a while until they get their footwork back together.  I like what she brought to us tonight.”

Shenise Sigsworth (second year, forward, Kamloops, BC) had 11 points.

Michelle Bos (first year, guard, Surrey, BC) had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 17 rebounds (10 on defense).  Emma Piggin (first year, guard, Kamloops, BC) had 12 rebounds including seven offensive boards.

Taiysa Worsfold (fourth year forward, Kamloops, BC) had 10 points.

UNBC was led by Sara Robin (fifth year, forward, Prince Rupert, BC) with 11 points.  Vasilila Louka (first year, forward, Athens, GRE) had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The WolfPack hit the road next week (November 14-15) to play the Griffins at MacEwan in Edmonton, Alberta.  UNBC will visit the University of the Fraser Valley.

Next home games for Thompson Rivers will be November 21st when they entertain the same UFV Cascades.
