One of the most exciting finishes in Vanier Cup history saw the UBC Thunderbirds defeat the Western Mustangs 25-23 as backup quarterback Eric Putoto climaxed a 62-yard drive by tossing a four-yard TD pass to Rob Ros with four seconds on the clock.

All-Canadian quarterback Steve Samways passed for 264 yards for Western, as the two teams combined for a Vanier Cup record of 911 yards in total offence.
