Canada’s junior national team had difficulty finding a rhythm in the match, and fell behind Iran early in each set.
“We played against men who had seen a lot of volleyball,” said head coach John Barrett. “They were really good at their craft, so even if we played our best volleyball it would have been a battle. It was a great experience for our guys. We will learn from it and get ready for tomorrow.”
In a match where Canada substituted liberally, Blake Scheerhoorn (Trinity Western) was the team’s leading scorer. The Belleville, Ont. native recorded six kills along with two aces.
“Our players wanted to play well. They tried their best and played with heart until the end,” said Barrett. “We have a reputation to be that kind of team and we will continue to do that.”
Team Canada will have just a brief time to rest before returning to the court against Thailand tomorrow at 11 a.m. (10 p.m. ET, Thursday). Thailand won its first game in straight sets against Switzerland.
