OTTAWA - The Gee-Gees started their year off well with a solid 7-0 victory over RMC in their home-opener and season-opening game.
Second-year midfielder Corina Jarrett, Ottawa, Ont., opened up the scoring for the Gee-Gees with a goal at only seven minutes into the first half. Gee-Gees captain Élise Desjardins, Cumberland, Ont., followed with a point of her own shortly after, and second year midfielder Aley Jotham, Ottawa, Ont., closed out the first half by firing a shot over the RMC net-minder.
In the second half, Jotham snagged her second goal of the game, while first-year striker Lili Wong, Nepean, Ont., buried three of her own, making a grand entrance into Gee-Gees soccer for her first game.
Wong admitted the “beginning of the game was a bit hard, I was nervous. I was frustrated with the offside calls. But I calmed down, timed my runs and focused. It all came back.”
Third-year Gee-Gees goaltender Mélissa Pesant, Gatineau, Qué., recorded her first shut-out of the season for the Gee-Gees.
Gee-Gees coach Steve Johnson was “absolutely pleased” with the team’s performance today. “The second half was much better than the first half. We linked the back to the middle and the middle to the strikers.” Johnson recognized today’s game as a “great opportunity for a lot of first-year players who got lots of playing time.”
The Gee-Gees next action is against Carleton on September 11, 2010 at 1:00 PM at uOttawa’s Matt Anthony Field.
