Quick pair pushes Vert & Or past Gaiters in women's soccer
Two goals within three minutes led to a 2-0 win for the Sherbrooke Vert & Or over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Soccer League women’s action Friday night at Coulter Field. The goals by Claudia Gosselin and Andrianne Gagne gave the Vert & Or their fifth straight win to move into third place in the conference.
The Vert & Or started the first half off quickly as Gosselin connected on a beautiful strike from 30-yards out in the 11th minute. Gagne put Sherbooke up by two goals only two and a half minutes later as she put a loose ball in the back of the Gaiters net.
The second half saw the Gaiters put forth a strong offensive attack only being a crossbar away from the scoreboard. The Gaiters' best scoring chance came when third year midfielder Becky Yates (Halifax, N.S.) grazed the crossbar with a shot in the sixtieth minute.
Marie-Michele Coulombe completed the shutout for the Vert & Or with four saves. Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ont.) took the loss in the Gaiters net making eight saves. MVP honors went to Gagne for Sherbooke and Chelsea Gaffney (Whitby, Ont.) for the Gaiters, who was an offensive spark plug all night.
The Gaiters (1-10-2) will wrap up their season on the road as they take on the Laval Rouge et Or (7-2-4) Sunday at 1 p.m. in Quebec City.
