BOYD KEEPS SPARTANS PERFECT
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University second
year midfielder Natalie Boyd scored the lone marker early in the
second half as the No. 1 Spartans defeated the unranked University
of Manitoba Bisons 1-0 Saturday night at TWU's Rogers
Park.
The win gives the two time defending CIS champion Spartans four
straight wins (4-0) to open the Canada West season, while the loss
drops the University of Manitoba Bisons to 0-2-2.
Despite the win TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh was not pleased with
his team's performance. "I'm happy with the win,
but I'm disappointed with the way that we played, said
Roxburgh. "Early on we had some good chances and created some
opportunities. But we weren't able to get one early and
soccer is a funny game and had we been able to bury one of those
early chances we might have played with a little bit more
sharpness."
For the most part the match lacked continuity with much of the
possession occurring in the centre of the park. TWU had the edge in
overall play and chances but only held a 9-6 edge in total shots at
the conclusion of the match.
The Bisons had the edge in shots on goal, 2-1, in the first 45
minutes, but the most of their shots were from outside the penalty
area and did not test TWU keeper Kristen Funk. The Spartans held
possession for the majority of the first half outshooting the
Bisons 5-4 in total shots and having eight corner kicks to the
Bisons none as the teams ended the half tied at nil-nil.
TWU's best chance came in the 10th minutes when TWU's
Daniela Gerig went in from the left side and sent the ball to the
far post. The Bisons Laura Harrison made a quality stop as she dove
to her left to get a piece of the ball and deflect it inches wide
of the far post.
The Spartans finally found the back of the net in the 56th minutes
for Boyd's first goal of the Canada West season. Boyd took a
ball from forward Daniela Gerig and as she was falling to the
ground just outside the leftside of the keeper area Boyd slid the
ball just inside of the far post to put the Spartans up 1-0.
The Bisons had a late flurry to try and tie the match in the final
minutes. Manitoba's Alison Kastner had two shots in extra
time, but Funk saved the first and the TWU defenders got in front
of the second as the Spartans held on for the narrow win.
TWU Kristen Funk made three saves to earn the shut-out win, while
Manitoba's Laura Harrison made one save in the loss.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of Saskatchewan on Fri.,
Sept. 24 and the University of Alberta on Sat., Sept. 25.
Match Notes: TWU finished with nine fouls to Manitoba's
seven…the Spartans had nine corner kicks, while the Bisons
had one…
