
Sherbrooke sweeps Western in tournament opener
Yoan David had 10 kills and four aces as the No. 2 and RSEQ champion Sherbrooke Vert & Or topped the OUA bronze medalist No. 7 Western Mustangs in the first quarterfinal game at the 2025 U SPORTS Men's Volleyball Championship Presented by Sunrise Credit Union Friday afternoon at the Healthy Living Centre Gymnasium.
Hugo Ouellet added seven scores and five digs, while RSEQ Player of the Year and U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian Jonathan Portelance tallied 28 assists, six digs and a .667 efficiency.
After a close first set narrowly won 26-24 by Sherbrooke, the Vert & Or cruised to a 25-12 second-set victory, before edging Western 25-20 in the third.
Oliver Toomes led the way for the Mustangs with nine kills, while OUA First Team All-Star Cade Smith registered eight kills and seven digs and Michael Jones had 25 assist.
Sherbrooke recorded a .324 hitting percentage in the match, compared to .203 for Western, who are making their first tournament appearance since 2014.
With the win, Sherbrooke advances to play the winner of the second quarterfinal between the OUA finalist and No. 6 Windsor Lancers and the defending U SPORTS champion No. 3 Alberta Golden bears Saturday, while Western takes on the loser of that match in the consolation semifinal.
