WINDSOR, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon men's volleyball team defeated the Windsor Lancers in a tight five-set match in the OUA quarter-finals on Saturday at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor. Set scores were 25-23, 12-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 12-15.
The Gryphons got off to a fast start as they built an early lead
in the opening set. The Lancers fought back late in the set thanks
to some solid hitting to take it 25-23.
The second set was all Guelph as they used a balanced offensive
attack and strong serving to take the second 25-12 and even the
match.
The third set was much like the first set as both teams fought hard
for the lead. The score remained tied for much of the set until the
end when the Lancers scored some big points to win 25-23.
The Gryphons responded again in the fourth set with some inspired
play as they built a big lead in the middle of the set and hung on
for the 25-18 victory.
The fifth and deciding set was close all the way as both teams
fought desperately for the win. In the end, the Gryphons took
advantage of some unforced errors to take the set 15-13 and the
match.
The Gryphons were led by Andrew Review (Guelph, Ont) with a match-high 25 points (18 kills, 3 aces, 4 blocks). Andrew Bartram (Aurora, Ont.) and Jonathan Whitton (Edmonton) chipped in with 18 and 16 points respectively.
