Charlie Waters and Kyle Cordeiro scored to lead the STFX X-Men to a 2-1 victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in the consolation final of the 2024 Bruce Power U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at Vaso’s Field in Oshawa, Ont., on Saturday.
STFX wasted no time getting on the board as Waters netted the opening goal in the third minute. A well-placed pass from Kyle Cordeiro found Waters at the 18-yard box, and the forward made no mistake, giving the X-Men a 1-0 lead.
Ontario Tech pushed for an equalizer, with Luciano Nania and Jack Sears testing STFX goalkeeper Samuel Diltz, but Diltz stood strong. Ontario Tech’s Alex Irwin also came close with a header that went high following an early corner kick.
The X-Men extended their lead in the 53rd minute when DeDekker’s perfectly timed header set up Waters, who flicked the ball to Cordeiro in the box to make it 2-0.
Ontario Tech found a lifeline in the 68th minute as Erion Metaj capitalized on a rebound off the crossbar from an Adam Klimek shot, tapping it in near the back post to bring the score to 2-1.
Despite Ontario Tech’s pressing efforts, including multiple attempts from Irwin and a near miss from Jack Reid, STFX held on to secure the victory. Diltz’s saves and disciplined defending by the X-Men ensured the consolation final win.
