The McGill Redbirds edged the host Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 1-1 (3-2) in in a dramatic shootout at the fourth quarterfinal of the 2024 Bruce Power U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at Vaso's Field.
The match began with pressure on both sides, but Ontario Tech struck first, with Kairo Coore scoring on a bicycle kick in the 12th minute, assisted by Alex Maadanian. McGill responded strongly and found an equalizer in the 36th minute when Yannick Laurent converted a pass from Maher Fares, leveling the game at 1-1.
Neither team could find a winner in the second half or two extra time periods, despite multiple chances and strong performances from both goalkeepers. McGill’s Ludovyck Ciociola made five crucial saves, while Ontario Tech’s Kevon Grant tallied eight saves.
The shootout saw McGill hold their nerve, converting three of five attempts, while Ontario Tech managed only two successful shots.
