
Godbout’s brace gives UBC win over UNB in six-goal thriller
A pair of goals by Henri Godbout led the UBC Thunderbirds past the UNB Reds 4-2 in an exciting third quarterfinal of the 2024 Bruce Power U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at Vaso's Field. Godbout found the net twice in the second half to send the T-Birds into the semifinal round.
The match opened with UBC quickly taking the lead as Joven Mann scored in the sixth minute, assisted by Luke Norman. UNB responded in the 39th minute when Stefano D'Ambrogio leveled the score with an unassisted goal. Just seconds before halftime, Mann struck again for UBC, making it 2-1.
UBC maintained momentum early in the second half, with Henri Godbout scoring two consecutive goals, the first assisted by Oliver Herbert in the 51st minute and the second unassisted at 57 minutes. UNB’s Hunter Delahunt found the net in the 80th minute, but it was not enough to overcome UBC’s lead.
Both teams displayed offensive prowess, with UNB registering 19 shots and UBC 17. UBC goalkeeper Bennett McKay recorded nine saves, while UNB's Mahmoud Moustafa tallied seven.
With the win, UBC advances to Friday’s second semifinal, while UNB will play a consolation game earlier in the day.
