The Ottawa Gee-Gees are headed to the U SPORTS men's hockey championship game after a 4-3 semifinal win over the Toronto Metropolitan Bold on Saturday at TD Place.
Mitch Martin led the way for Ottawa with two goals, including the game-winner at 19:18 of the third period. His first came on a power play in the opening frame. Bradley Chenier and Vincent Labelle also scored for the Gee-Gees, who will now compete for their first-ever University Cup title on Sunday.
Toronto Metropolitan stormed back in the second period with goals from Jordan D'Intino and Ian Martin just over 90 seconds apart to briefly take a 2-1 lead. Ottawa responded quickly, with Chenier and Labelle finding the back of the net to restore the lead before the intermission.
Tyler Savard pulled the Bold back within one at 14:46 of the third, but Ottawa held on, sealing the victory with Martin's second goal in the final minute.
Franky Lapenna stopped 30 shots for Ottawa, while Kai Edmonds made 25 saves for TMU.
With the win, the Gee-Gees advance to Sunday's championship game. The Bold will play for bronze.
